Some Obvious and Not So Obvious Inspiration

There are times that people come up to me and ask me about my inspiration for my books. Sometimes they ask me what I'm smoking but that's a different topic for another day.

When the idea for Life is a Stevie Wonder Song hit me, the title wasn't on the radar yet. I knew I was going to write my first Gay for You novella. I knew it would be a May-December. I knew the Catskills would be the setting and I knew that my leading man would be an author and lover of old vinyl record albums.

My muse took over and I had my rough draft done in about eighteen days. As I had worked through the story, one performers name came up repeatedly. His songs and the joy that they bring stood out to me. They perfectly reflected the emotions of both Stephen and Declan as they met and then slowly fell in love with each other. When title time came, the name of the book sang out loud and clear. i'm sure you can figure out who this amazing singer and songwriter is.  I hope you enjoy reading this wonderful tale of one man's self-discovery as much as I did writing it.

Blurb:
Authors know that their muse is a fickle creature. Best-selling spy novelist Stephen Ramsey has been in a hate-hate relationship with his inspiration for months. When Stephen's publisher lays a legal ultimatum upon him, with a rapidly approaching deadline, he knows he must do something to kick-start his creativity or face the unemployment line. His daughter comes up with a possible answer: a summer camp for the creative soul. With nothing to lose, Stephen packs up his laptop, phonograph and beloved record albums and heads from Greenwich Village to the Catskill Mountains.

There, among a horde of college students attending for extra credits, is Declan Pomeroy, a photographer of fey creatures who is twenty-two years younger than Stephen. The woods are a magical place, and he quickly finds himself falling under the spell of the free-spirited photographer. Confusion wars with desire inside Stephen as he succumbs to the feelings welling up inside. But, sadly, summer camp always has to end. Can a man who has just found himself really leave the person that makes his heart sing?

Driven by visions of his soul mate, Tristan, Jinsu steps through the portal to Earth, leaving all he has ever known behind.. Seven months into their fairy-tale romance, and Tristan and Jinsu couldn't be happier. But when Jinsu falls ill with a mysterious, lingering condition, everything changes. Jinsu's magic is dying and taking him with it. Suddenly the couple's desire to find a way back to Jinsu's home world is more than just a dream–it's a necessity. With Jinsu's time quickly running out, Tristan is forced to seek help from someone he'd hoped to never, ever lay eyes on again.

Tristan awakens on Torottu, but the portal wasn't meant for humans, and he's been near death since his arrival almost ten months ago. Even worse, Jinsu has no idea who Tristan is—the return trip through the portal erased his memory of Earth, of their relationship, or Tristan himself. Winning Jinsu's heart again won't be easy, especially if Kelan, Jinsu's twin, has anything to say about it. Kelan loves Jinsu, too, and he won't be put aside for Tristan. Not again. Tristan knows his only chance for happiness—and the only chance for Jinsu and Kelan—is to follow his heart.

by DC Juris
Warning: Story contains Twincest.
Previously published by Breathless Press.

Life is a Stevie Wonder Song
by V.L. Locey

Five Things To Do Outdoors

It's the season of the holiday rush and bustle.  As I consider what to do this year for our family holidays, it occurred to me that there is plenty to do outdoors even when it's cold outside.  I live in Chicago, so cold happens.  If you live somewhere warmer, even better - get outside and play!

Here are five ideas of things to do in the winter:

  1. Go to the zoo!  My zoo, and several of my friends who live in other towns have this at their zoo too, has a program called Holiday Magic.  They light up the zoo at night!  Srsly.  How cool is that?  See the animals, listen to music, have some hot chocolate, and get festive!
  2. Go ice skating!  Chicago has several places where you can do this and it's not a lot of money, which is a plus in these tough economic times.
  3. Cross-country skiing!  This is not a free activity, but if you've got some cash squirreled away for fun, why not give it a try?  It's not as hard as it looks, trust me.  You basically walk with a swish.  Try it and find out how easy it is!  Many cities have places you can do this - of course, you have to be up here in the snow belt.
  4. Light my fire, baby!  No really.  Have a barbecue outside!  This one's easy.  You just need your barbecue, or one at the park, and some charcoal.  You can even roast marshmallows!  (This requires that you either like marshmallows or bring someone how does, that you can feed with your hands and... you get the idea.)
  5. Window shopping!  Why not wander around the chichi section of your downtown?  In Chicago, it's Michigan Avenue, or the "Magnificent Mile."  Looks are always free!
I know my ideas are my-town-centric, but what about you, Dear Reader?

What are your favorite things to do in the winter?

Beyond the Bestsellers: Books for the youth in our lives

A librarian moaned, "But all they want is Catching Fire." It can be hard to get teens to crack open any book that has not yet been made into a movie. But there are some great options among those published by Prizm  Books (Torquere's YA imprint). If you need gifts this holiday month, take a gander.

Mine are set in ancient Greece, and the second comes out tomorrow.

While I love the old mythology of that landscape and people, I do have some trouble with the classical version. I have never liked Homer's Helen of Troy. She seems so helpless. Beautiful yes, but she seems egotistical, self-centered and weak. So when it occurred to me that a kidnapped princess was a good place to begin a story, I set out to describe a  very different young woman than Helen.

Yes Thalassai, the heroine of my novels  Moon of The Goddess and Before the New Moon Rises is pampered and lives sheltered in a palace, but when she is plunged into danger, she faces her fears and her kidnappers. She finds there is strength in her, and smarts. Thalassai becomes an instrument of her own rescue.

Sure there is a hero, her brother Melanion, who sets out to free her. He has an important role, and a dangerous journey to make. But when he gets to the kidnappers city, he finds that the goddess has been helping his sister, and Thalassai has grown stronger. Still, the god Poseidon is against them, and the situation is tangled. They both have to dig deep first to gain her freedom. then to deal with the Earthshaker's desire for revenge.

The Sky People Trilogy
by DC Juris
Warning: Story contains Twincest.
Previously published by Breathless Press.

Life is a Stevie Wonder Song
by V.L. Locey
