Haunted Hotties Volume II - Halloween Q&A

Halloween Q&A:

Favorite Candy
Rob Rosen: Candy? And maintain my 29-inch waist? No thank you. I simply check my fruit for razor blades before I eat it.

Dakota Caudill: Reese's Peanut Butter Cups

Avery Dawes: dark chocolate...but no nuts!

Louisa Bacio: Reese’s – I get a serious craving, and most often I eat the chocolate part off first.

Favorite Costume
Rob Rosen: Slutty barista. Leave your name on the cup and your underwear by the door.

Dakota Caudill: Those cheesy werewolf costumes with the ripped plaid, fake fur, and rubber mask.

Avery Dawes: I saw a child dressed as an Ewok one time. It was freaking adorable!

Louisa Bacio: Growing up, I can’t tell you how many years in a row I was a princess! Right now, I’m looking for a Little Red Riding Hood. Wish I could pull off a Black Widow!

Favorite Movie
Rob Rosen: Ah, let's go full-on gay Halloween horror here. Hellbent is a must see: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0356159

Dakota Caudill: Hocus Pocus

Avery Dawes: hmm...I don't really have one. My favorite TV shows are Covert Affairs and The Blacklist.

Louisa Bacio: All-time remains Grease. If we’re talking Halloween, Hocus Pocus!

Porch light on or off?
Rob Rosen: I live in the city. My porch light is always on, especially on Halloween. Safety first, people.

Dakota Caudill: On

Avery Dawes: Porch light off.

Louisa Bacio: We always leave the porch light on. Doesn’t matter much. The spirits don’t mind.

Trick or Treat?
Rob Rosen: Treat. Always treat. Karma's a real bitch, after all.

Dakota Caudill: Treat!

Avery Dawes: I'd have to go with Treat!

Louisa Bacio: Is there an option for both? I like to play both sides.

From Elizabeth Coldwell:
Trick or Treat is a relatively new import to the UK, and not that many people take part. Particularly not ones of my vintage, who grew up with other traditions surrounding Halloween. For us, it’s a time to play games like bobbing for apples (in which apples are placed in a tub of water and you have to try to get them out using only your mouth) and tell ghost stories by candlelight, the spookier the better. We save our biggest celebrations till November 5th, when we commemorate an unsuccessful attempt to blow up the Houses of Parliament by lighting bonfires, setting off fireworks and eating lots of delicious food like sausages, potatoes baked in their jackets and toffee apples. Because nothing is more fun than celebrating failure with a big party...

Bonus Story: Kevin's Ju-Ju Coffee

Kevin Grimes had always wanted to open a coffee shop. As a college student,
he often joked with his best friend about it. David, to his credit, thought
it was a good idea. "You have the charisma for it," David had said.

Once Kevin had separated reality from the joke, he realized how serious
about the idea he truly was. He majored in Business to further his goal.
Kevin was determined, which meant it was only a matter of time before he set
up shop. David, once he stopped laughing, agreed to be a partner in the
venture.

The shop was almost ready to open when David died in a freak accident. Kevin
was devastated, unsure of what to do. In an effort to honor David, Kevin
opened Grimes Java the day after the funeral. He had a plaque specially made
to go on the front of the counter, proudly declaring the shop to be a
partnership between David Hayes and Kevin Grimes. The locals all knew what
good friends the men had been and were sympathetic to Kevin's way of
grieving.

Catherine, David's widow, was completely unsympathetic. She glowered at
Kevin during the funeral, snubbed his hug, and threatened him if he so much
as looked at her daughter. She had never liked Kevin, and he was able to say
the feeling was mutual. Catherine vowed to never set foot within Grimes,
calling it a disgrace to her husband's memory. That was fine by Kevin, but
he missed Kaitlyn. He wanted her to see the plaque with her father's name,
and to taste the hot chocolate recipe David had just perfected before his
untimely death.

Kevin threw himself into his work, ensuring Grimes would grow into a local
favorite. Tourists always told him it was the best coffee they had ever had
and asked if they could buy ground coffee. The demand grew until Kevin
eventually began marketing small bags of Grimes coffee along with custom
mugs bearing the shop's logo. There was just something special about the
coffee at Grimes.

Kevin did occasionally see Kat in the shop. She came with high school
friends and eventually by herself, always lingering when she looked at the
golden plaque. When the gossip mill eventually revealed Kat was looking for
a job, Kevin saw an opportunity to have at least have a part of his old
friend back. He offered her work and she leapt at it, proving to be the hard
worker her father had been. She possessed David's sense of humor, and Kevin
often shared laughs with her at closing time over jokes he had once told to
David.

When Kat began dating Emily, Kevin knew it would only be a matter of time
before she learned his true nature. That he was a Wiccan, and that David had
been one as well. Kat never specifically asked about Wicca or her father,
but she did tease about "ju-ju" being in the coffee. Kevin laughed,
wondering if Kat knew how right she was.

Disclaimer (an epilogue)
by Charles Payseur

The shot is fuzzy a moment, then settles on a face. Young, smiling. The star of the show.

[Really. The star? I thought we were going to be—]

Fine. A star of the show. Better?

[Proceed.]

All right, so then I start out with, "The first thing you'll ask is if it's real. I know how it seems. I'm a ghost hunter. Of course I want people to believe there are ghosts. But this is real. This really happened and for the first time there is real proof. Ghosts exist."

[So dramatic.]

Just keep listening. "The second thing you'll as is why is it edited. And, well…"

[Rina still says we'd get way more hits releasing the unedited version.]

I sort of think FaceTube will have a problem with that going live on their site, don't you. It sort of violates the terms of use.

[Is that what it violates?]

Quiet you. Anyway, where was I? "…well, the truth is that the uncut video is way too raw for FaceTube."

[Raw? Seriously? You're just trying now.]

"We are, however, having the footage examined by a number of experts."

[You know that's just what Rina told you so she could show it to her friends, right?]

"And we will be completely transparent when it comes to sharing the results of their study of the tape."

[You also know that you're cute when you're ignore me, right?]

"I think, though, that what you see here will speak for itself. Because it does. Speak, that is. And manifest as a glowing, malicious figure. And—"

[And try to kill us. And get banished when we—]

"And you have my personal word on it that everything that you're about to see is completely real. So sit back, relax, and let's make history."

[I still think that we should just go with the original cut. Isn't going out of our way to provide this context a little… desperate?]

I think people will appreciate that we're taking the extra effort to get the footage examined. And maybe it will preempt some of the skeptics. Plus, who doesn't like a little facetime with t— I mean, a star of the show?

[I can see we're going to have to work on this whole sharing thing.]

Says the guy who was on the cover of People.

[Still sore about that?]

Still sore about more than just that.

[Too sore to have a little fun?]

The cameras still rolling, you know.

Templeton has a run-in with the Lake Erie pack and their alpha, Mikel Lupei, at the Office for Transmogrification Registration (OTTER). Templeton has a desk job checking registration papers and dealing with wolf shifters is not part of his job description. After that upsetting meeting the meek and mild office worker suddenly finds himself in the center of not only civil unrest among the shifter community, but a violent plan for a coup aimed at rousting Mikel.

Templeton and Mikel, a skilled tracker of rogue shifters, are soon not only fighting for their lives, they`re also fighting the rigidly archaic rules of their kind, as well as the person responsible for trying to take over Mikel`s pack from the inside. Reading into Being

What's your favorite love story?

I couldn't sleep last night and spent a lot of time thinking about this question.  What's my favorite romance? Who's my OTP?  There are a lot of answers.  Willow and Tara from Buffy the Vampire Slayer.  Maggie and Hopey from Love and Rockets, Alexander and Hephaistion, Larry Stylinson.  So many to choose from. So many different kinds of love. Sweet, bittersweet, eternal, doomed. I feel privileged to live in a time when I can find so many stories that reflect the kind of love I feel, show me my place in the world.

I'm not THAT old, but I am old enough to remember a time when it was hard to find LGBT books, and nearly impossible to find books for queer teens and even more impossibler than that to find ones about lesbian teens. I think the first book with gay characters that I ever read was The Well of Loneliness, and let me tell you, that's not what a yearning fourteen year old needs to be reading.

I went to the library (in Midwest City, Oklahoma, in 1984) and looked for 'homosexual' in the card catalog.  They had two books at this branch under that subject heading. One was the Kinsey report, and the other was a book I can't remember title or author, but the one line I read when I opened it up was burned into my mind forever. I can still quote it:  "If you think you are a lesbian, the first thing you need to do is figure out if you're butch or femme. If you don't know this, no one will ever date you. It would be like trying to date someone when you don't know if they're a boy or a girl."  I thought "Well ok then," shut the book and went home to try and puzzle that one out. I never did, but have had a few dates so I guess it's all working out.

And today we have so many resources, so many books, fics, movies, TV shows, video games, etc etc etc where queer kids of every stripe can see themselves, enjoy themselves, understand themselves. I'm happy and proud to live in this time, and even happier and more proud to be able to contribute to that canon.

So tell me-- what's your favorite love story?

He has good friends and a supportive family, which helps, but lately his family is changing and his friends have troubles of their own. Julian is afraid he’s being left behind.
Then he meets Duncan. The star of the school basketball team, Duncan has never crossed Julian’s social path. A fateful encounter one cold night brings the two young men together, igniting a romance that neither of them expected, and that both can scarcely believe.
But Julian and Duncan are in different places. Julian is happily out, unconcerned with others’ opinions. And Duncan, while he knows who he is, isn’t ready to face the challenges of living out loud. Even as the two grow closer together, Julian begins to question whether he can live with Duncan’s desire for secrecy. And even if he can, does that mean he should?
When the crisis of their romance leads to a shocking betrayal, Julian must decide if he will fix this love or tear it apart.

Haunted Hotties Volume I - Halloween Q&A

Favorite Candy:

Kiernan Kelly: I can't eat candy anymore because I can't have sugar (sucks to be me!), but when I could, I loved dark chocolate. For a while, Kit Kats used to come in a dark chocolate version, and those were my ultimate favorites.

Alex Cohen: York Peppermint Patties. When I was a kid, I wanted any of the fun size bars. They were excellent bricks for building candy castles.

Katey Hawthorne: Reese's Pieces all the way

Aaron Michaels: Chocolate!  Seriously, anything chocolate, although I have a soft spot for Mounds and Hershey's Kisses.

Jacey Mills: Candy corn

L.J. Hamlin: Wonka nerds or Galaxy salted caramel chocolate.

Sheri Velarde: Anything dark chocolate, the darker the better.

Kassandra Lea: Toss up between Crunch and Kit-Kat.

Favorite Costume:

Kiernan Kelly: When I was in high school, a group of my friends decided to dress as the Addams Family. I was Lurch (I wanted Morticia, but I was outvoted, damn it. I always wanted her dress!), and I built a little Cousin It to drag around with me. He was about two and a half feet tall, covered in long, yellow yarn "hair." He had a little hat and a pair of sunglasses, and was mounted on a pair of roller skates, which the hair hid. Best of all, I used to have a tape recorder (for you younger kids, that's a Stone Age version of an MP3 player) that had a remote. I taped myself talking, then played it back at double-speed. It sounded just like It.

Another favorite costume was one I made for my son when he was about seven or eight. The Teenage Mutant Turtles were all the rage that year, but they only had Turtle costumes for sale. My son wanted to be Shredder, so my husband and I made it for him. I used foam curlers spray painted silver for Shredder's spikes. It looked awesome!

Alex Cohen: Batman! I love costumes and cos play in general. Seeing what everyone comes up with is so much fun.

Katey Hawthorne: This year I'm going with Freddy Kruger. I like the classics.

Aaron Michaels: pirate, ala Jack Sparrow

Jacey Mills: Non-Sexy Witch, though the Sexy Witches get all the fun.

L.J. Hamlin: Changes every year. But any versions of vampires is a top.

Sheri Velarde: I am getting married this Halloween, so I am going to say my blue fairy wedding dress will probably always be my favorite.

Kassandra Lea: It's been a few years since I dressed up, but when I was younger I was fairly proud of the Cruella De Vil custom my mom made for me.

Favorite Movie:

Kiernan Kelly: George Romero's original Night of the Living Dead still gives me the creeps, and I refuse to watch it alone. I also love the original Halloween, with Jamie Lee Curtis, and any of the 50's-60's "B" monster movies, like Them or The Blob.

Alex Cohen: Not a fair question! I love movies! If I have to pick a scary movie that I really enjoyed, I'd have to say: Let the Right One In. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1139797

Katey Hawthorne: Dracula. I like several different versions, but the Bela Lugosi one is always a treat.

Aaron Michaels: Cabin in the Woods

Jacey Mills: ParaNorman

L.J. Hamlin: The Lost Boys, Interview with a Vampire.

Sheri Velarde: Nightmare Before Christmas.

Kassandra Lea: The Nightmare Before Christmas and Hocus Pocus, I have to watch both.

Porch light on or off?:

Kiernan Kelly: Always on, if I'm home. I love seeing the kids' costumes.

Alex Cohen: My porch light is on until we run out of candy!

Katey Hawthorne: So very, very on. Bring us your trick or treaters!

Aaron Michaels: On.  Definitely on.

Jacey Mills: I'm usually out with my husband trick-or-treating with my kid, so porch light is off. When it gets too cold though, I'm home and the light is on!

L.J. Hamlin: Off, but because I'll be in a bar on Halloween with my friends.

Sheri Velarde: On if I am home, love to dress up and give out candy.

Kassandra Lea: Off, having people constantly ringing the bell drives my dog crazy.

Trick or Treat?:

Kiernan Kelly: I'll take the treats any time. Also, my grandkids come to our house to go trick or treating every year. We hop onto the tailgate of my pickup and cruise the neighborhood. It's awesome!

Alex Cohen: First one and then the other...

Katey Hawthorne: Treat! I mean, unless you really deserve the trick... >.>

Aaron Michaels: Treat.

Jacey Mills: Trick =)

L.J. Hamlin: Treat, I always like something good to eat.

Sheri Velarde: Depends on who is asking ;)

Kassandra Lea: I wish it was still done in the dark! I leave out a bowl of candy and let them take what they want.

Many people ask where my inspiration for stories comes from. The answer is
from anywhere. Possessed by Love takes place in an area of my hometown that
is close to my heart. In Albuquerque there really is an Old Town center full
of wonderful restaurant and unique shops. A place where artisans and
designers such as Andrew can be found. Over the years it has become more and
more of a place for tourists, but us locals still know where to go to find
what we want. As with an older part of any town, there are many ghost
stories to be had in Old Town, there is even a haunted walking tour that you
can take. That is where the real idea of Possessed by Love came from, from
looking at the old buildings that I know so well and hearing of some of the
hauntings said to take place right in my own backyard. Of course I had to
put my own romantic twist to it and voila, a story is born!

For a little added bonus, since story takes places in the heart of New
Mexico and we are famous for our green chile here, I thought I'd throw in a
classic green chile stew recipe!

Green Chile Stew

Serves 8

3 tablespoons vegetable oil

1 1/2 pounds beef sirloin or pork butt, cut in 1-inch cubes

1 1/2 cups diced onion

1 tablespoon minced garlic

6 cups chicken or beef broth

1 pound red or white potatoes, cut in 1/2 to 3/4-inch cubes

2 to 3 teaspoons salt, to taste

3 cups roasted, peeled, chopped green chile or to taste

3 tablespoons diced red bell pepper

2 tablespoons chopped cilantro, to taste

Heat the oil in a 6-quart pot over high heat and brown the meat in batches.
Set aside. In the same oil, saute the onions until golden. Add the garlic
and saute 1 minute. Return the meat to the pan along with any juices that
may have accumulated. Add the broth, potatoes, salt and bring to a boil.
Reduce the heat and simmer for one hour, until the potatoes are tender. Add
the green chile and the red bell pepper, and cook 15 to 20 minutes more. Add
the cilantro, stir and serve.

We use locally grown green chile when making the stew. It is roasted over a
fire or gas flame, peeled and chopped. When the chile is not in season, we
use roasted, peeled, chopped, frozen green chile. You could also use
freeze-dried green chile in place of the fresh.A combination of mild and hot
chiles produce a more balanced flavor.

Extra:

I love the Oregon coast. The motel in Haunted Honeymoon is inspired by a
motel I've stayed in often during my trips to visit the ocean. That motel is
also said to be haunted, and I've had a few otherworldly experiences during
my stays, none quite as vivid as some that I've heard about. Or that the
characters in this story experience.

Ahh, fall, my favorite time of year. The trees are changing color, the veil
between worlds is getting thinner, and everything smells like woodsmoke!
Yeah, I'll just slip that middle observation in there casually, right?

Anyhow, there's nothing I like better in fall than a particular cocktail,
and I think it pairs well with my contribution to the Haunted Hotties
anthology series here at Torquere, Pr├Žsidium. Thought I'd share it with you
all, if you want to curl up with a warm, spicy drink and a fire and a hottie
carrying around a pervy demonic tagalong. (Uh, don't go around looking for
that last one, please -- it's in the book, I promise.)

Get yourself your favorite mug, first. Then fill it about ¾ with apple cider
-- heated on the stove is best, if you can do it, but no one's gonna tell on
you if you microwave it. Sprinkle in some cinnamon and clove for good
measure, squeeze in a generous orange slice, and then top off with the
bourbon of your choice. Drop in the orange slice, if you like, and a
cinnamon stick for garnish. Voila! Fall in your mug!

As a nonalcoholic alternative, fill the rest of the mug with orange juice
instead of bourbon. Works beautifully! Sorta like wassail, but without
having to go sing from house to house. (We'll do that for Christmas, right?)

Blurb:
Hearing that his ex-best friend is getting married might be the only thing that can lead Andy back to his wolf pack deep in the Colorado mountains. He's a city wolf now, leaving behind the awkward, skinny teenage geek he was once upon a time. All he wants to do is see Levi one last time, and maybe lament what might have been between them if Levi had been brave enough to leave the pack with Andy all those years ago.
Levi has been a good soldier in his Alpha's army, the second-in-command for several years. Seeing Andy again reminds Levi how he's toed the line, and how all he's gotten for it is a lonely life. He's not sure why Andy came back, and at first he's not even happy about it. Their need for each other runs deep and strong, though, and Levi has to wonder what he would do for Andy if the man would just ask him one more time.
