Author Extra: The Rainbow Serpent's Gift

The Rainbow Serpent's Gift
By Adrik Kemp

When Justin and his boyfriend, Luke set out on their latest hiking expedition in the Australian wilderness, they have the same goals as always – discover more stunning, hidden gems and make love under the trees and open sky.

On this particular adventure, they stumble across a waterfall and small lake, untouched for hundreds of years. A brief exploration leads them to the terrifying and dazzling legend of the Rainbow Serpent.

The couple must keep their wits about them when confronted with the gargantuan deity and between terror, curiosity and lust, their inner desires are revealed and made flesh.

Author Extra:
The Rainbow Serpent is an Aboriginal Australian creator deity from the Dreaming. I grew up with this legend and have always held it and many other Aboriginal stories close to my heart. All proceeds that the author earns from this story will be donated to the Indigenous Literacy Foundation – dedicated to addressing literacy issues in remote, Indigenous communities.

Author Extra: Cadmean Victorious by Verionica Sloane

Cadmean Victorious
By Veronica Sloane

A lifetime of patient study turned Cadmean into the perfect thief. He relished his mastery and saw no end to his profitable career until a deceptively exuberant hunter corners him. Canny and unrelenting, Laelaps will chase Cadmean to the ends of the earth and beyond. Lines blur between hunter and hunted as the stakes rise.

Author Extra:

This is how Laelaps learns of Cadmean.

At five, Laelaps is already the best tracker in his village. He learns by dogging his mother’s footsteps as she traces deer through dry summer days to provide meat for the family table. She teaches him everything and when he knows all she can tell him, she sends him to other houses.

At ten, a raiding party takes him along with many other spoils. It will be years before he returns and finds everything smaller, but more lovely than he remembers.

At fifteen, he joins a lord’s guard as a dogsbody. Within weeks of signing up, he thwarts a kidnapping attempt on the lord’s wife. No one else on the royal guard notices anything is amiss.

At seventeen, he trains elite soldiers. Rumors begin to circulate about him.

At  twenty, his prowess has become legendary. Dozens of thieves and highway robbers are snared in his nets and tricks. His services are borrowed by prestigious names far and wide. He becomes almost as wealthy as he is canny.

At twenty-one, he is bored. Dreadfully, painfully and utterly bored. The mundane blackguards with their sticky fingers and dull minds are no longer a challenge. Even the annual hunt for the white hart does little for him.

A commission comes from the west, a little thing. This tiny relic snatched from under the nose of a fiercely protective gentlewoman. She sleeps with the relic under her pillow with one hand curled around it and a guard at her door, yet she wakes and it is gone.

The fee for return is small, but Laelaps smiles at the message and goes.

He investigates. He prods. He tracks.

There is nothing. Not a hair, not a whisper, not a scratch. He cannot tell how the thief got in, how they left or what they did with the relic after.

That is how he finds out about Cadmean. Not through story or rumor, but through his absence. In the lack of evidence, Laelaps began to form a picture of this perfect thief and his nose began to twitch, his hear to race.

At twenty-one, Laelaps knew Cadmean and the chase would live on forever.

Author Extra: Lineage by John Amory

Lineage
By John Amory

Peter Chronis grew up hearing countless stories about his family's long history from his Greek grandmother, Helena. When she passes away, Peter pays his respects to her memory by visiting the place she loved so much. He returns "home" to Argos, the city in which his family originated. There Peter looks for clues to find out just how far back he can track his ancestry. What he finds is a literal representation of his family tree, where a strange encounter with an ancient Greek god will change his view of himself and his personal history forever.

Author Extra:

Inspiration

I didn’t plan on submitting a story to the Mythologically Torqued anthology. I’d seen the call, and it interested me, but as the deadline approached and I became even more busy than usual (teaching multiple sections of college composition, working as an office assistant whenever time permitted, performing in a musical), it didn’t seem likely that I would find the time to submit a story.

But then I started reading a book I had been meaning to read for a while: Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides. It sat on my shelf for about three years before I finally decided to tackle it as my first read of 2015. I was struck by the familial relationships, especially by how secrets and strange twists of fate can be unknowingly passed down through multiple generations. The Stephanides family was fractured but strong, and I really latched onto that notion. And their family saga really read like a modern-day myth. Even after I finished reading Middlesex, I kept thinking about family histories, about our lineage and how that connects us to people and places so strongly and so inexplicably. So with a snow day in early February, only a few days before the deadline for this anthology, I furiously wrote the story of Peter Chronis and his thousands-of-generations old family history, dating all the way back to a time when gods walked among the Greeks.

Peter’s is a story I didn’t know I needed to tell until the words were escaping my body through my fingertips. There’s something universal about writing and reading family histories that makes us feel grounded. Family is the first thing we learn as infants, and bidden or not, family is where we typically return throughout or adult lives. Sharing our personal histories is a kind of catharsis, knowing that someone else will live on in you if you just remember them and share their legacy.

Author Extra: Persephone's Fruit by Corrine A. Silver

Persephone's Fruit
By Corrine A. Silver

A cunning and sometimes malevolent Queen looking for her princess.
An innocent falling under the sorcery of a halfing-God’s speech.

When she sees Orpheus’ intent, Persephone cannot countenance Eurydice’s marriage. She intervenes, killing Eurydice to save her from that life. The life that she sees as a mirror of the life Hades tried to force on her. And the women come together in a passionate tryst.

When Orpheus entreats Hades to return his wife, Persephone points out that Eurydice cannot return to life after eating of the fruits of the Underworld. She devises a test that she is sure Orpheus will fail, but it will require all of Eurydice’s bravery and fortitude.

Will they find themselves allowed to carry-on their love, or will Orpheus thwart them?

Mythology, whether classic or modern, has always taken readers on a magical ride. Mythologically Torqured, volume 2, takes those tales from days of old, or more recent history, and places a unique spin on the beloved lore.
The gods of Olympus make appearances, as do deities from Japanese, Native American, and other belief systems. With rampant sexual desires, these gods manage to slake their thirst for passions of the flesh in a rather untraditional manner... if the oral traditions passed down from generation-to-generation were at all accurate.
These eighteen stories are penned by both seasoned scribes and new authors; the anthology provides readers with the perfect opportunity to explore offerings from their favorite storytellers as well as find a new favorite or two. And, a unique perspective on the stories we enjoyed—or were forced down our throats at the hands of a sadistic English teacher or two—in our youth.

Containing M/M and F/F as well as Trans stories from authors Adrik Kemp, Alex Cohen, B.A. Tortuga, Corrine A. Silver, Darren Endymion, Drea Silvertooth, John Amory, Lazuli Jones, Logan Zachary, Lynn Townsend, Madeline Moore, Moxie Marcus, Natasja Hellenthal, Rhidian Brenig Jones, R.R. Jones, Veronica Sloane, and Yolande Kleinn, Mythologically Torqued, volume 2 is sure to have something for every penchant.

How To Write a Series Concordance - One Author's Approach

Mount Rainier Emerges From the Clouds
©2015 A. Catherine Noon; All Rights Reserved
Like a mountain coming out from behind a cloud, the worldbuilding in a novel can show us the underlying structure of a created environment.  If we do it well, the reader doesn't even realize it's there.  When they catch a glimpse of it, the reaction is like when we see a mountain:  "Ooh, beautiful."

When we started writing Persis, we had a concept of the early Harlequin White Covers meets Anne McCaffrey's Pern.  Rachel likes to twist tropes (a trope is a traditional genre story, such as rich man/secretary, nurse/patient, etc.) and use them in a M/M (male-male romance) context.  I like building worlds with their own cultures, and the idea of doing it on our very own planet excited me.

Which led to the first problem:  what's the planet like?

Here are ten questions I found useful as I built my world.  I keep them in a document I call a Concordance, and it's the repository of all the series rules from currency and geology to family lineage and kinship paradigms.

  1. What are the basic world details?  Is it a desert planet away from trade routes?  A bustling city with millions of residents?
  2. Astronomy - what's the solar system like?  Is there interstellar travel?
  3. Days of the Week/Structure of the Year.  This one is obvious if it's another planet, but what about right here on earth?  If your characters aren't following the mainstream religion, then what are their holidays?  If they are, they might have particular ways of celebrating things like birthdays.  How do they split up the year?  In school, it's with semesters or quarters.  At work, it might be fiscal year.
  4. Political System and Societal Organization/Macroeconomics.  Is it a feudal system?  How do people get work, buy goods, own homes?
  5. Main City/States.  This is obvious if we're creating our own world, but it helps even with worlds that overlay this one.  For example, in a shifter series, where are the main shifter groups located?
  6. In the case of our Persis series, the Keeps play a major part in the story.  We had to know where they are, how they are organized, and what each one specializes in doing for it's students.
  7. Legalities.  In the case of Persis, we have something we called Contracts, and this is the legal document that binds a Keeper and his client.  The document itself is called the Contract; additionally, the client is called the Contract.
  8. In our case, we had to develop different occupations, and each one got a section.  This helps us keep track of things like Drivers, Herders, Ranchers - especially when they aren't in every book or scene.
  9. Ceremonies.  Are there specific ceremonies in your story?  In ours, we have a tea ceremony, but it's not the same as the one most people think of.  How is it different?  Maybe you have a shifter culture with a particular ceremony for coming of age.  Anything that your characters do that's unique or special to commemorate special occasions can go in this area.
  10. Modes of Dress.  In the case of Persis, this is complicated because dress is an indication of social status (it is in our real world, too, but we are more familiar with those rules).  It's useful to put some thought into this even for "real" world characters, because it can help deepen your characterization.
We love writing series, because they let us play in a world of our own creation.  Rachel and I are hard at work on Sapphire Dream, the next book in the Persis Chronicles.

What about you, Dear Reader?  What are your favorite series?
