University of Southern Georgia: Davy & Tony
by Jack Bridges

Love is a funny thing…it happens when and where you least expect it.

Tony has been having a rough couple of days. His dad caught him with a dirty magazine, which would have been embarrassing enough. But when his dad realized it was a gay magazine, he chased Tony down the street. Luckily, Uncle Alfonso and Aunt Luciana have taken him in. Now, he’s out to the world, going to school during the day, and working in the family restaurant at night.

Davy has become what he always dreamed of being: an Army Ranger. He loves everything about it. He’s assigned to Fort Benning and works as an analyst. He also happens to be gay, but even with the repeal of Don’t Ask Don’t Tell, he’s careful not to let his personal life get in the way of his professional goals. His friends know, but he’s never introduced them to anyone he has dated…until he meets Tony, who changes everything.

Elder Peterson's Mission Memories
by Jeff Laver

Steve Petersen has been hoping his homosexual feelings are “just a phase.” But as a nineteen-year-old embarking on a two-year Mormon mission in South America, he realizes those feelings are still there, and he’s attracted to another missionary—the companion he’s been assigned to be with 24 hours a day.

Set primarily in 1972, less than three years after Stonewall, these missionaries have been taught by their church that homosexuality is an abomination, and those who “suffer” from those “tendencies” must repent. Worse, with God’s help, fervent prayer, and mind over matter, they can become heterosexuals. Steve’s conflict is real and heart-wrenching; he’s an official representative of his church, but he’s falling in love with his companion. Can he reconcile his church doctrine and the feelings of his heart?

Andrew's Prayer
by Ashavan Doyon

For Andrew Tuttleman, sex is a means to an end. With a mother too sick to pay the bills on her own and college bills to pay, Drew has spent years resorting to sex with strangers to keep a roof over his mother's head and keep himself at school, far away from the hell where he grew up. This summer, his usual tricks are still paying the bills. But there's a new one, Grant, who never got the memo that a trick is a no-strings deal. Convinced that Drew is the answer to a hopeless prayer, Grant seems ready to pursue Drew to the ends of the earth.

Drew, on the other hand, isn't so convinced. Grant comes with trouble in the form of a wife and three kids, not to mention a single and unwavering requirement: that Drew give up his livelihood. Grant's kiss makes Drew ache for more, a romance that he never dreamed possible. He finds himself unexpectedly willing to try. Can Drew weather Grant's angry father, wife, and a daughter determined to kick him in the shins so hard that he'll leave Grant's life forever? It all relies on Grant's faith in an impossible prayer.

Love in Los Angeles and the absolute terror of writing a series

Writing a series is a mildly terrifying thing.  You live with the characters on a day-to-day basis in their lives and in your own in a way that can be all-consuming and desperately personal.

With the release of Phoenix (Love in Los Angeles 3), Erin and I no longer have to endure the emotional impact of two very big shocks that happen in this installation alone.  Yet, because we don't want to spoil you, we still can't really talk about it.

Like the rest of the series Phoenix aims to take the fairytale of fame, and pull back the curtain.  The story isn't about wealth or ambition, although our characters do have plenty of both.  Nor is it about being in the closet, as so many Hollywood tales are.  Rather, it's a love story about people just like you and me -- difficult, uncertain, stressed out, and just trying to find their way in the world -- who also just happen to be famous.

By the end of Phoenix ten years have passed since the opening of the first book in the series, and with more to come (we're finishing up book 4 now), Erin and I continue to have the uncanny experience living whole lives through people who never were.

We decided to publish the Love in Los Angeles series with Torquere because of Torquere's tag-line, Romance for the Rest of Us. We hope all our readers -- regardless of orientation, relationship style (the book contains both monogamous and polyamorous romances), background, disability, mental health status, or gender -- have a chance to find themselves in our books.  Not because we're working off a check-list, but because those have been the realities of our lives.

We really hope you'll join us and other readers of this series (which has to our shock and delight now spawned fan art and fanfiction) on this journey.

You can grab Phoenix in ebook or print from your favorite retails, or nab the ebook from Torquere for 25% off with the code Pride2015 through the end of the month: http://www.torquerebooks.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=4409

If you haven't started the series yet, Starling (LiLA 1) and Doves (LiLA 2) are similarly available everywhere and also at Torquere: http://www.torquerebooks.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=97&products_id=4269

Determined to find the truth, Gates gets help from John Ed, a street-smart, sixteen-year-old recovering addict. Together, they navigate an underworld of body theft, interstellar drug trafficking and doctors who double as dealers.

Author Extra: Phoenix By Racheline Maltese and Erin McRae

Phoenix
By Racheline Maltese and Erin McRae

Sometimes the end of everything…

Now happily married to writer and producer Paul Marion Keane, television star J. Alex Cook’s life has been a fairytale of success and romance for years. But when an unexpected tragedy throws his and Paul’s social circle into chaos, the alumni of hit TV show The Fourth Estate are forced to pick up the creative pieces left behind.

...is just the beginning

Confronted with his own mortality, Paul suggests he and Alex start a family. But figuring out what family means when your best friends’ polyamorous marriage may be melting down and you have Hollywood’s most malevolent fairy godmother to thank for your success is no easy proposition.

As Alex questions whether anyone in a profession full of make believe can truly have fame, fortune, kids, and the happily ever after of their dreams, he sets out to take control of his own life and discovers that the best love stories never truly end.

Phoenix is Book 3 in the Love in Los Angeles series.

Phoenix by Racheline Maltese and Erin McRae | Torquere Press : Torquere Press, LLC, LGBT Romance at its finest!

Author Extra:

In many ways Phoenix is a difficult book for us to talk about. Nearly anything we say risks being an incredibly significant spoiler. While it is only book three in what we intend as a six book series (we're hard at work on book four now),  Phoenix is also very much the culmination of many key issues that have driven Alex and Paul's story to date. And that culmination comes with a death.

On the surface, death can seem like a tricky thing to include in romance fiction. Yet it's something Erin and I can't seem to stop doing. Whether we're writing about widowers, or people who have lost children, or Alex's terror that fame comes with death just like it did for Marilyn Monroe, death is one of the ways our characters -- and hopefully our readers -- are able to admit to and experience love.

In Doves (Love in Los Angeles 2), for example, Alex asks that Zach, his character on the TV show that made him a star, be killed off. That way, no one else can have that character or make up stories about him. Zach's narrative becomes fixed by his absence. When fictional characters die, sometimes we -- the audience -- feel even closer to them, because while we can't have a conversation with our favorite characters when they are alive, their absence when they die isn't that dissimilar from the absence of non-fiction people. Suddenly the fact that you can not touch or hold your favorite character makes perfect sense. It's heartbreaking, but it's also satisfying for the peculiar reality of the experience.

As you might imagine, we really enjoy the work of Joss Whedon, where no one is ever safe.

That said, we will tell you this about Phoenix: Alex and Paul are safe. And everyone, even the dead, get their happily ever after. In Phoenix the stakes are high, the issues are familiar, and the solutions are new. Its events take our characters through the last of their childhoods and into the hard work of being adults blessed and cursed with the opportunity to tell stories the rest of the world thinks of simply as Hollywood magic.

Author Extra: Coming Out Catholic by Alex Dunkin

Coming Out Catholic
By Alex Dunkin

Like all good Catholic boys I care what Jesus thinks. Jesus -- both the man and the faith. Following him makes me happy. Theres just one issue I think Im gay. Well, its hard to be sure while going to an all-boys school. It could be a matter of simply liking what I know, and really, oh so very much liking what I see all day -- guys. Being gay and Catholic cant possible work together. Can it?

Coming Out Catholic follows a year in the life of a private Catholic school student as he comes to terms with his sexuality. Armed with sarcasm and his best friend Mark, he prepares to take on the school thug and the awkward social encounters plaguing his late teenage years.

Confronting himself and his family are just the beginning of his trials. He finds he must find solace with his sexual desires without surrendering any of his faith. He loves both too much to deny either one, but when the time comes he will have to decide if he must turn away from one and prepare to succumb to a life of denial, or if, by some miracle, he can find acceptance for both within himself.

Author Extra:

This is the news feature I wrote which is the very beginning of my manuscript. The story evolved from this research. It is a little long (800 words). Is this appropriate for this section?

God and the Gays

We live in a world of sin or so you might think, if you try mixing taboowith religion.

Blending faith with personal identity can be a struggle for anyone who identifies as both Christian and homosexual.

Formerly ordained Anglican Deacon Greg Strutt knows firsthand the burden of guilt experienced by people who believe their sexuality is incompatible with their faith.

Mr. Strutt came outand confessed his homosexuality to great support from close friends and family, but felt alienated from the Church, and eventually left his position.

Luckily he remains philosophical about his situation.

I can get bogged down in the stresses and the problems within the Christian denominations, but the thing that is really important to me is living the authentic life,Mr Strutt says.

From what he has seen and personally experienced, Mr Strutt knows there is a problem.

Some Christians get caught up in the conservative group of peoplethats when LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender) people can feel excluded,he says.

There have been a lot of people who have unsurprisingly walked away from the church or walked away from faithafter being treated that way.

Some people have been forced close to walking away at a young age.

Hannah, 20, had trouble accepting her homosexuality after her Christian upbringing taught her it was wrong.

I felt like I couldnt talk to anyone because all my friends are Christians, she said.

I almost felt like killing myself but then I realized God doesnt want me to feel like thisand then I started to accept it.

It is hard to integrate yourself into a church when they dont want homosexuals to be a part of teachingwe are thinking of going to a different church that is actually accepting of gays.

Completely balancing faith and a homosexual relationship is further complicated with heterosexual marriage ideals encroaching into federal laws.

There are those who consider God to cherish any form of love and wish to see it validated in legal marriage and, of course, there are others who see gay marriage as one of the greatest evils.

The latter position isnt something Hannah can easily understand.

I see marriage as standing in front of the people you love in your life and saying how much you love the person standing next to you.and you are also saying it in front of God,she says.

Some people may take a negative view on homosexuality due to their interpretation of religious scriptures.

Scriptures can fuel conflict due to their ambiguity.

Sandra Turnbull, Senior Pastor at the Glory Tabernacle Christian Center in California has studied religious scriptures in depth.

She describes extracts with uncertain meanings as clobber passages, and uses the story of Sodom and Gomorrah in Genesis 19 as an example.

The story, in which cities are destroyed, is widely recognized as a divine response to homosexuality but Ms Turnbull notes that Jesus spoke of Sodom and Gomorrah as sinfully inhospitable.

We should probably take the words of Jesus to heart and understand that Genesis 19 has nothing to do with human sexuality and certainly not homosexuality, she says of her interpretations.

Ms Turnbull adds that the story was never seen by the Hebrew people as a response to homosexuality until sometime between 200 BC and 100 AD, when more extreme interpretations began surfacing.

Her analysis also takes in the Pagan religious practices of the Egyptians and the Canaanites.

Fertility cult religions demanded the offering of seed or semen to the God or Goddess in order to receive the blessing,Ms Turnbull says.

The priest or prostitute at the pagan temple would receive the seedin the form often of sexual intercourse.

Thus, the prohibition for Hebrew males in Leviticus 18:22 and 20:13 to have sexual encounters with a male as with a womanis Gods way of saying do not go and offer your seed to these priests and prostitutes.

Greg Strutt takes a similar view.

Theres not always an easy answer when some people read scriptures,he said.

I think its much more valuable to look to the central teachings of Jesus.and how he acted toward people.

For me thats a loving acceptance of people for who they are.

Contextual issues aside, Ms Turnbull suggests that it is not good idea to apply ancient texts to modern day homosexuals.

To err on only emphasizing their sexuality and forget the spiritual component of their lives is a tragedy and not Gods purpose at all,she says.

Many gays and lesbians today are Christians and love Christ Jesus as their personal savior yet they have been ostracized from the Church at large because of the misuse of these scriptural passages.

Human sciences and social sciences also inform us that human sexuality is variedthere is a spectrum of sexuality and so the Church must embrace all of Gods creation.
