BDSMonday - Hard and Soft Limits

It's BDSMonday!

Today I'm talking about hard and soft limits.

First of all, what are hard and soft limits? Hard limits are something you are never, ever willing to try. If someone tried an activity from that list with you, you would immediately end the scene and (probably) never play with them again. There are two hard limits that are considered more or less universal, because they can't be considered consensual - bestiality and pedophilia. From there, the list is much more personal.

Soft limits are activities you're not ready or willing to try yet, or that you want to approach slowly and carefully. They're not something that should be sprung on you when you're tied up, or that should be spontaneously added to a scene.

The important thing about limits, at least as far as I'm concerned (okay, well, beyond the obvious "respect people's limits, yo") is that they can change over time, and in either direction.

When I first started exploring kink, I was really curious about electrical play and thought I'd really enjoy it. Due to a bad experience and another that was really "meh", electrical play is at least a soft limit, if not a hard limit.

The reverse is also true. I can't think of a personal example, but there's also nothing wrong with having something on you're not sure about, something on your soft or even hard limit list, and trying it with a partner you trust. It could eventually become one of your favourite things!

Even if you think a limit is silly or you think pushing it would help your partner grow as a person, respect that limit. Your partner may have had a bad experience in the past that they haven't shared with you, and they know a particular kinky activity will give them flashbacks. They may have an injury that prevents them from certain positions or activities. It's not your place to judge someone's limits, and it's not anyone else's place to judge yours.

If someone tries to pressure you regarding your limits, think long and hard before you play with them! Pushing your limits is a very personal decision that should be made by you, not by someone you're playing with. I've heard plenty of stories of people having their limits pushed, without warning or advance discussion, when they were in the middle of a scene and relatively helpless, and to me that is not okay. People usually have limits, especially hard limits, for a reason besides "I don't want to try that".

Have a great week everyone and play safely!

Chris Owen and Tory Temple discuss their first books!

Hey everyone! Happy Tuesday! In our house, Tuesday is almost Wednesday, Wednesday is Hump Day, and then you're only two days from Friday. So Tuesday is practically the weekend, see? Ha.

We're here to talk about our very first books with Torquere Press, as well as a special project involving both of those books. If you're a fan of Jake and Tor from Bareback, or maybe Chance and Tucker from Heat, then you'll want to pay close attention.

Tory:  My first book with Torquere was a novel of 41,000 words that I wrote in less than a month. I was actually attending Toronto Pride in the summer of 2005 when I came up with the idea, and I came home and wrote it so fast that it was written, edited, proofed, and released before the end of that year. That book was Heat, and its 50,000 word sequel was released within the following few months. Before writing Heat, I had not seen any books out there that featured gay firemen. It was a challenging thing to write. There were so many clichés I wanted to avoid while still being true to the lifestyle of firefighting. Fortunately, the books ended up being a big success for me and encouraged me to expand that world a bit more.

I've changed for the better as an author since then. I'm definitely more in tune with what readers want to see, but finding a balance between that and where I know my characters want to go is tricky at times. Sometimes there is no compromising -- the story needs to be told a certain way. My readers have been very loyal and stuck it out with me!

Chris:  As for me, my first book was a massive tome of almost 95, 000 words that was released when Torquere opened their doors in September of 2003.  Bareback was my first effort at cowboys, my first effort at long format stories, and my first taste of how characters can really stick with an author. Jake and Tor have had an amazing shelf life, and appeared in a sequel as well as a few short stories.  I was given the wonderful opportunity to re-edit Bareback for the tenth anniversary of the press, so they're fresh and shiny in hardcover, as well!

I have changed my style greatly from those early days; I have far less sex in my work now, but just as much emotion and drama. I remain fascinated by characters and what they do when placed in strange circumstances, and have developed stronger skills at showing the worlds that the stories take place in.  That said, Jake and Tor remain my all time favorite men to write and talk about. They're the ones who really took on a life of their own outside of the written word, letting me see deeper into them than what I had time to write down to share.

Also, I know nothing about real cowboys. Jake and Tor have suffered so much under my care!

But they're not suffering now! Oh no. They're ready to come back out to the world in the form of a new series of books that Tory and I have been working on for the better part of eight years, and intensely for the last few months.

Tory and Chris:  After Bareback and Heat were released, we decided to see what would happen if we wrote a mash-up of the two couples. It was just for fun, just for us, and was never supposed to see the light of day. Well, it was a good plan, except we certainly didn't count on an actual story developing! 200,000 words later, we realized that this was much more than "fun." This was a book with the potential to be an intense love story.

On November 5, 2014, the readers will get to experience Jake and Tor and Chance and Tucker as we've seen them for the last eight years: a family. Four strong wills, four stubborn attitudes, and four emotional journeys on the road to becoming better together.

We hope you'll all join the cowboys, the firemen, and us as we take this ride!

BDSMonday - Sleepy Thoughts

It's BDSMonday!

Today's topic...well, it requires a little explanation.

Okay, um...I've been reading a lot of Star Wars books lately. Like, a lot. And one night, while I was in that falling-asleep-silly-brain state I thought, "Darth Vader would be really good at breath play..."

Look at that! I'm sure he has excellent control!

There's even a video (though I find the lack of apostrophe disturbing. And someone has a lot of time on their hands and it isn't me).

And then of course that made me think, "I bet the Emperor would be really good at electrical play."

I have a point, really, I do! Okay, maybe not a point, but close enough! Do you guys have any vanilla-references-that-could-be-turned-kinky to add to my weird list?

A MMF ménage story.
When anthropologist Georgia Cortez heads to rural Georgia from New Mexico, she’s on the trail of a juicy old legend. Haley Falls seems like just the place for old-time ghost stories and spooky hauntings, but she’s on the hunt for something far rarer, a survival of an old sect of medieval knights.
Caid and Alton are Haley Fall natives, and they used to be best friends. A falling out years ago ended in them not speaking, even after Alt left town and returned older, if not wiser. They unite when it comes to a nosy scholar like Georgia picking apart their heritage, and putting their whole town in danger. When boys meet girl, though, they decide wooing is far better than scaring the lady off, and they set about distracting Georgia in the best way.
While their three way romance heats up, so does the intrigue in Haley Falls, until the three of them are facing a danger far worse than falling in love with each other.

BDSMonday - Funishments

It's BDSMonday! (For real this week!)

Today's topic is funishment vs punishment. What is funishment? In a BDSM context, funishment is giving the sub/slave/etc. a form of play they enjoy when they're 'naughty' or break one of the relationship's rules. It's different than punishment, which is generally play the sub doesn't enjoy as much, or withholding play.

It could be argued that funishment is rewarding bad behaviour...but there's nothing wrong with that! It's usually silly and good fun for everyone involved.

In your kinky relationships, do you use funishment, punishment, or both? What sets them apart for you?

For myself and my Sir, we usually lean more toward funishment when we're playing as ourselves (as opposed to roleplaying). We're more comfortable exploring actual punishment as different characters, but we find those scenes a lot more intense and we don't do them very often.

Vanilla readers: do you prefer reading about punishment or funishment? (Or both!)

I think there's a certain pleasure to be had in reading about punishment, knowing that it's a fantasy and no one is actually being hurt.

Underground: Special Teams by Sean Michael

I've started a new series! Like the Hammer Club stories, this will be a series where each book will follow a different couple, often with cameos from the other pairs. Unlike the Hammer Club, these stories are culled from a group of men who get together in each other's homes. A more informal, underground club, if you will. Hence the series name -- Underground.

The first story features Hunter, the cop who goes in undercover to make sure these guys are on the up and up and not abusing, torturing, etc, their subs, and Keifer, a SWAT team member who happens to find himself at the underground parties whenever he has downtime.

I do love exploring the dynamic of a tough, capable, Alpha-type male who needs the release of being a submissive, of ceding control to find release and peace. Keifer is just such a man and he's floundering. Sure the group of men he plays with are happy to include him and to help him out whenever he attends, but there's never been anyone interested in Keifer permanently because he's not an easy sub -- he needs to be forced to submit and he fights it. Luckily for Keifer, Hunter's about to put in an appearance!

Isn't the cover absolutely amazing? It was done by the fabulous Kris Norris.

When Hunter Simms goes undercover at an underground BDSM party, the last thing he expects to see is SWAT’s leading shooter Keifer Magnessen bound, gagged, plugged and very naked. He is immediately drawn to Keifer, and wants to get to know his fellow cop better. Much better.

With such a high stress job, Keifer needs to give up control on his down time in order to decompress, but it’s a secret he holds close to his vest. So, when Hunter walks into his chosen place to submit, he tries to cut and run. Lucky for him, Hunter is shrewd, persistent and quite possibly just the Dom that Keifer needs.

Can these two strong men find a way to make their personal lives mesh?

Look for Underground: Special Teams on September 17 at Torquere Press.

We're almost mid-way through September, which means the charity sips are about to go away. The charity chosen last year was OutServe. You can learn more about OutServe here. Author Extra: Starling by Racheline Maltese & Erin McRae

Starling
By Racheline Maltese & Erin McRae

Be careful what you wish for...

When J. Alex Cook, a production assistant on The Fourth Estate (one of network TV’s hottest shows), is accidentally catapulted to stardom, he finds himself struggling to navigate both fame and a relationship with Paul, one of Fourth’s key writers. Despite their incendiary chemistry, Alex’s inexperience and the baggage they’re both carrying quickly lead to an ugly break-up.

Because the stars aren't benign

Reeling from their broken hearts, Alex has an affair and Paul has an ill-advised reunion with an old flame. Meanwhile, the meddling of their colleagues, friends -- and even the paparazzi! -- quickly make Alex and Paul’s real life romance troubles the soap opera of the television season.
But while the entertainment value may be high, no one knows better than Alex and Paul that there are no guarantees when it comes to love in Los Angeles.

Available here: http://www.torquerebooks.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=96&products_id=4269

Author Extra:

The first time Alex goes to Paul’s house for dinner, Paul makes them Thai curry. Alex may survive on spaghetti and sauce from a jar, but Paul -- when he has the time and especially when he has someone to cook for -- likes to putter in the kitchen. The cat may want to get into the chicken, but he doesn’t really have an appreciation for good food.

A discussion of the food turns into a discussion of their families and their experiences coming to L.A. from their own small American towns. For both of them, trying new food in their new city was the first sign that were out of their leagues but were also desperately ready for the adventure of it.

Thai Curry:

2 teaspoons olive oil
1 lb skinless, boneless chicken breasts, cut into 1" pieces
1 red bell pepper, cut into strips
1 onion, chopped

1 14 oz can light coconut milk
1 tbsp lime juice
2 tablespoons yellow curry paste
2 tablespoons brown sugar
2 tablespoons peanut butter
1 teaspoon minced garlic
Chopped fresh basil and cilantro

Crushed peanuts for topping
Heat oil in large saucepan over medium heat.
Add chicken, onions and peppers and cook for about three minutes
Stir in coconut milk, lime juice, curry paste, brown sugar, peanut butter, garlic, basil and cilantro.
Cook for another 5 minutes, sirring occassionally.

Serve over rice, top with crushed peanuts

And here's a preview of Doves (Available January2015 from Torquere Press)

Paul’s asked him, more than once, if climbing feels like flying.

“No,” Alex always tells him. “It feels like being a very tiny bug on a very big rock. And a lot like almost falling.”

“Please don’t fall.”

“The entire point is to not.”

This high up it doesn’t even feel like bugs or falling. It feels like rock and his ropes and the wind in his hair, even if Paul will yell at him again for not wearing a helmet.

He slips, just a little, and his palm stings on stone. One more scrape for Zach. Victor will be thrilled. For Alex, it's a reminder that he wasn't quite careful enough. For Victor, it's pain for one of his beautiful things which, as a rule, he delights in. It's a mark of how long Alex has been doing this, and how weird his life is, that Victor's inevitable reaction doesn't even seem that fucked up anymore.

When he gets back to the ground there will be a dozen things to worry about, from the Fourth Estate renewal that is taking longer than it should, to Paul’s pilot that he's hoping anxiously for a pickup on, to the trip to South Carolina they’re finally taking now that they both actually have time. While Alex is up here, though, there’s nothing to worry about except not falling. He happily puts all of his concentration into that and lets the rest of the world fade away.

On the descent he startles a family of cliff swallows and grins as they swoop away.

***

“Marry me?” Paul says, while Alex stands at the bathroom sink brushing his teeth before bed.

“What?” Alex says, spitting before he chokes on the toothpaste in horror. He meets Paul’s eyes in the mirror.

“Marry me,” Paul repeats, because he’s apparently decided the only way out is all in.

“Paul….”

“Yes?”

“Nooooo,” Alex responds.

He can tell it’s not what Paul wants to hear, but Paul laughs anyway as he nudges Alex to the side a bit so he can wash his face. Alex, still holding his toothbrush and staring at him, knows he looks horrified.

“Sorry,” Paul offers. “Momentarily overwhelmed by our domestic bliss.”

A year-and-a-half in, Alex has a keen ear for when Paul is trying to hide his crazy behind his facility for witty dialogue.

He makes a face at Paul, who just shrugs.

Alex shakes his head. “You want to get un-overwhelmed and fuck me instead?” he asks, because they are desperately in need of a topic change.

“That’s a sexy come-on.”

“You asked me to marry you while I was brushing my teeth and we have a flight in eight hours,” Alex points out. “Go with it.”

Paul laughs. “You’re not too sore after your climb?”

Alex scoffs. “You’re doing all the work.”

Paul swats at Alex’s ass as he walks past him out of the bathroom. Alex drops his toothbrush into the sink, because when Paul does things like that, Alex loses all ability to do anything but respond.

These stories have been previously published as individual Torquere e-books and can be found in the print collections, The Complete Dr. Fell volumes 1, 2, and 3.
