Choices is a collection with three of Chris Owen’s popular short stories.
In Six Years On, Lexi's Place isn't a typical gay bar, and the town isn't typical either. Which is good, since Lexi and Jamie aren't your usual ex-lovers, and their second chance isn't what it seems. Next comes Better Than a Sale: Halloween is busy at a costume shop, but when the lights go out after closing and one more person needs servicing, Marco Prince is glad he's still working.  Cross dressing for a scavenger hunt and helping Saul get bonus points to win the contest more than make up for a busy retail day.
Finally Chris offer Walking Spencer. When the next door neighbors ask Dean to walk their dog while they're away Dean is happy to help out. Spencer is equally happy when Dean's playful game with a dog leash leads to something far more intense than Spencer had bargained for.
All stories previously published individually by Torquere Press.

BDSMonday - Decision Making

It's BDSMonday! (And I'm not actually here...technology is spooky. Odds are that at the moment I'm on my way home from the Calgary Expo, where I will have met Mark Hadlow and Jed Brophy and hopefully not scared them. It's in the future for me right now, but it will be in the past for me when this post goes live. Whooooo! Oooohhh!!! <--spooky noises)

Anyway.

Today's question:

What is your opinion on Doms/Tops (etc) making decisions for their subs/bottoms (etc)? (This isn't some creeper coming up to a bottom at the bar, handing them a drink and saying, "I got this for you." There has to be a power exchange already in place.)

Is it all right for a Top to order their bottom's meal for them? To control all of their money? Is there a point that you feel the bottom has to be an autonomous, responsible adult, or can they surrender all of their power and decisions to a Top?

Personally, I really enjoy having meals ordered for me and things like that. (We usually don't plan ahead and I'm pretty choosy when it comes to food, so this doesn't happen very often!) Most decisions are made by me, simply because 1) I'm the choosier of the two of us, and 2) my Sir doesn't want to have to make all of the decisions. So it's still a power dynamic.

As for finances, we have a joint bank account. (It's my only bank account, and it had better be my Sir's because otherwise she's been holding out when we really could have used the money! :P). Small, day-to-day purchases are made whenever something's needed, though we may occasionally check with one another if funds are running low. We decide about larger purchases together, though the final decision usually comes down to me. I'm the household's butler--I pay bills, do taxes, and generally keep track of our money. (I also do most of the cooking, cleaning, and general household maintenance. I still tease my Sir for remarking one day, "Wow, the kitty litter is always clean! It's like magic!" Me: "...yes. Magic.")

Author Extra: The Wolf in the Woods by Nicole McCormick

The Wolf in the Woods
by Nicole McCormick

A witch has cursed Malachi into a wolf form until he can form a bond with another human. Seamus walks through the woods every day to visit his grandmother. Malachi has fallen for Seamus and believes Seamus to be the man he is supposed to bond with.

When an incident pushes them together, Malachi realizes that Seamus has more of an interest in Malachi than he knew, but is it enough for Malachi to return to his human form?

This story is also available in the Torqued Tales M/M Anthology.

Available at Torquere Press: http://www.torquerebooks.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=96&products_id=4176

Author Extra:

Malachi stumbled out of the house and into the woods, clutching his chest at his labored breathing. He finally collapsed out of sight from the house, but it didn’t matter. She could find him if she wanted to. She could see him now if she wanted to. She probably was watching him. She would want to see him transform into a beast, the beast she had cursed him to be.

This wasn’t the way it was supposed to be. The witch was supposed to be his friend, and yet, she had cursed him.

The pain was excruciating. It was what he deserved, she had told him. The transition back to human would be easier, she had said. He would have earned it then, she had added.

Malachi howled in pain, an irony considering what he was about to become. He spat and cursed, and heard laughter on the wind. He knew she was watching him. She laughed at his pain, his suffering, though she had been the one to cause it.

He could feel his bones breaking and reforming, his organs shifting. He was becoming a beast.

According to the witch, he would remain a beast until he could form a bond with another human. He wasn’t sure what that meant. How was he supposed to form a bond with a human if he was a beast? This wasn’t a fairy tale.

He pulled off his clothes before they could be shredded by his transformation. Black fur was beginning to sprout along his body. The shifting was becoming more painful. The pain was too much to take, and rather than keeping him awake, he was beginning to lose consciousness.

Malachi let out one last long, pitiful howl. Before the blackness took him, he noticed how the howl had already sounded more wolf than human.

***

Awareness came back to him slowly. The world sounded different with his new ears. The world smelled different with his new nose. He pushed himself up unsteadily - four legs instead of two.

The witch had done it. She had turned him into a wolf. He was doomed to live a lonely life until he could find that one person who would befriend him despite the fact that he was a beast. Which meant he was doomed to stay this way forever.

He wanted to kill the witch. He wished that he could. It would be a wasted effort. If she had the power to turn him into a wolf, then she certainly had the power to prevent him from attacking her.

He howled, a low, mournful howl - the howl of a lonely wolf instead of a human in pain. It sounded more pitiful to his ears. Even worse, no other wolf answered his call. He truly was alone.

Malachi set off into the woods, wanting to put as much distance between him and the witch as possible. It was time to start his long, lonely life as a wolf.

BDSMonday - Different Types of Masochism

It's pretty unusual for my wife to be in the mood for bottoming, but it happens from time to time. While sadism or topping in general aren't really my things, I like to make sure that all of her needs are met, so I oblige.

The last time she wanted some impact play was about a month ago, and I was struck by how different our approaches are to BDSM-type pain.

For me, the pain is the goal (*heh* I accidentally typed gaol...) It's enough, in and of itself, for me. I get off on it, whether or not any traditionally sexual activity is happening at the same time.

For my wife, however, the pain is a means, a way to release emotion and energy and to get into an altered state of mind.

It's like the difference between drinking because you like the taste of alcohol, and drinking because you had a shitty day and want to take the edge off it. (Not that I'm advocating irresponsible drinking or play, but there are definitely times that a drink or a spanking can turn your whole outlook on life around!)

I fall into the first category (in my analogy and not--I do like the taste of alcohol). Alcohol's effects are a pleasant bonus, but not usually why I drink (or play).

When my wife is bottoming, it's the equivalent to knocking back a shot of whisky and pulling a face afterward--get it over with so you can get intoxicated.

Which type of masochist (or drinker!) are you? Which other kinds of masochism have you encountered?

How's the Weather?

Now that's a loaded statement, huh?

Here on Maryland's Eastern Shore, we've got rain (plus a few rumbles) today. Nothing terribly exciting, but, hey, at least I don't have to water the new garden. Of course, that's when Mother Nature throws a wrench into the works. Apparently, Salisbury is facing a freeze warning tonight.

In mid-April.

Um.

Yeah.

According to weather.com, the upper midwest is looking at (yet another) potential winter storm, too. I'm still trying to wrap my brain around that one. Anyone up there? What's the weather looking like, firsthand?

My middle daughter mentioned one time how horrible the weather forecasters were at predicting the weather. I explained to her that one can't really, truly predict the weather because Nature does whatever it wants. Forecasters can certainly try to predict it based on countless variables and data, but, in the end, it's still guesstimating.

So what's the weather like in YOUR neck of the woods? Are you enjoying a nice day out? Or, like me, have you simply given up trying to make sense of any of it?

BDSMonday!

It's BDSMonday!

Today's question: What are some of your favourite pervertibles?

I recently got one of my favourites again--rose stems with the thorns left on. Yummy. You've gotta be quick and tell the florist not to cut them off (and ignore any weird looks you may get). The stems don't hurt much more than, say, a crop or cane, but I must warn you that occasionally the thorns will get stuck in your skin (still attached to the stem, luckily!) and you'll feel them being pulled out.

Some other pervertibles I enjoy are signal paddles and wooden spoons that my wife and I have painted and made fancy.

What about you? :D

Celebrating Passover with queer women

Isaac the wizard and Rivka the warrior woman from The Second Mango protecting their queer loved ones, Queen Shulamit and her partner Aviva.
Across the doorposts and lintel are streaks of the pride rainbow, which are protecting them just as the streaks of lamb’s blood are supposed to protect our people on Passover.

Meanwhile, sometimes Queen Shulamit doesn't mind being gluten-intolerant!

Family of Choice

As a writer, there are the plots you choose and the ones the story provides on its own. When I started writing Stories Beneath Our Skin, I planned on having a few fun side characters to liven up the place. Like decorative pillows or knickknacks. My story had another idea altogether. The casual background characters grew more and more crucial to the plot. Eventually, I found an entire new theme running through the story: Family of Choice.

It probably isn't surprising that this topic rose up from my unconscious as a mostly welcome kraken. I’m an only child, who often felt isolated from extended family by age and circumstance. Instead, my friends have often taken the place of familial roles. One such companion, another only child, came up with the term 'sister-friend' which has the added bonus of sounding a bit creepy cultish if said in the correct tone of voice. Separated by half of North America, we speak on the phone every week without fail and often text during the day when we encounter the weird and weirdly banal. It's a complex relationship to navigate in many ways. The reality is that we don't have those powerful blood ties or family pressures that might bring us back together during a rift. Instead, we have to build that bond ourselves. We have to believe in our sisterhood and revive it constantly. Only our investment makes it 'real'.

It was only recently, despite years of writing romantic stories, that I realized how strongly romance is about seeking that very kind of relationship. After all, what is a long term romantic partner, but family of choice? Out of all the people in the world, you are the one I want to spend the rest of my life with. That's a powerful statement that many spend their lives longing to hear.

With all these thoughts stewing in my messy brain, it isn’t surprising that Stories Beneath Our Skin became laced with these ideas. Beleaguered Liam, who is about to lose his central father figure, spends much of the story on the outside looking in to the assembled family that makes up the tattoo parlor where he works. While his budding relationship with Ace is critical, the friendships that he builds with the rest of the Great Sin Ink crew are what truly help him come of age.

This book is my first novel length publication and if it weren't for my own family of choice, it might never have come to be. I hope for all my readers that they have at least once such person in their lives. Feel free to tell me about your family of choice in the comments.

If it were just those two, Liam might have stood a chance -- but there’s also Ace, the owner of Great Sin. He hires Liam despite a thin resume, and that is a kindness Liam can’t forget. The two start up a tentative friendship, learning about each other as the summer days melt into each other. Slowly, Liam reveals a tender heart underneath the wall of quotes he uses to keep everyone out. Unfortunately, life doesn’t stand still, and both Liam and Ace have hard struggles before them that might break them up before they can even get together.

Author Extra:

“Do I want to know what’s in this?” Liam picked up the violently red glass with a wrinkled nose.

“What you want is to slam it down and then drink a glass of milk,” Ace shook his head, “or skip it all together. Never understood the appeal of poisoning yourself with spice.”

“Aw, don’t tell me you’re gonna punk out?” Frankie called out from halfway down the bar, “I made that special for you!”

Liam took a deep steadying breath and brought the glass to his lips. His lips started tingling before he even took the first sip. One gulp later, and tears were pouring down his face.  He greedily drank down the glass of milk Ace handed him.

“Am I going to die?”

“Nah.” Ace’s hand was warm and soothing on the back of his neck. “I think you’ll make it.”

“Jesus,” Liam wheezed.

“Bet you don’t have a quote for that one,” sweeping back down the bar, Frankie looked far too pleased with herself.

“'He who controls the spice, controls the universe,'” Liam said around his last swallow of milk.

“Damnit,” she reached into the till and pulled out a ten, slipping it to Ace.

“Told you a little thing like that wouldn’t throw him off.” Ace squeezed gently at the back of Liam’s neck.

“I can’t believe you assholes bet on that,” he groaned.

“Sorry, Professor.” Ace’s hand slipped a little lower, starting a whole different kind of fire under Liam’s skin. “But I knew you were a sure thing.”

It's Finally Spring!

In the long, dark depths of winter cried out a voice and the voice said:

GIVE ME SPRING!

Poof.  It's Spring.

So.  How about your neck of the woods?  What's the weather like there?

In Chicago, there's a saying:  "If you don't like the weather, wait five minutes."  I didn't really think this was literal truth, at least not when I first moved here from the west coast mumble-something years ago.  I mean, out west, we have weatherpersons that actually, you know, forecast the weather?

Yeah.  Not so much here.

It was October and I was looking for a job.  I wore a cute little suit by Evan Picone that cost me a couple paychecks to earn.  Well, one paycheck - but in those days, I wasn't making a whole lot per paycheck and ...  well, you get the point.

So there I am in my - DRYclean only - heather grey skirt suit with cute little shiny shoes and KABLAM!  The skies opened and a deluge descended.

Um, I had no umbrella?  Because the weatherperson hadn't said it was gonna rain Pekinese on my sorry head?

Seriously, people.  Cats and dogs have no meaning until you've been in a Chicago rainstorm.  Except possibly the rainstorms they grow in Indiana, but we don't talk about those.  ~shudder~

I called my Very Nice Interview Man with whom I had my appointment for my job interview - you know, that really casual thing that it doesn't matter if you blow off last minute because you happen to look like a drowned rat?  Yeah.  That would be the one.

Thankfully, this man knew the weather in Chicago and laughingly introduced me to that Chicagoan saying, "Well, if you don't like the weather..."

Yeah.  Thanks, pal.  I get the picture.  Loud and wet.

I mean, wet and clear.

And, for the record?  I now carry an umbrella everywhere.

What about you?  What weather-related catastrophe have you survived because the weatherperson got it wrong?

BDSMonday!

Hi everyone, and welcome to my inaugural BDSMonday post (for that matter, my first post of any kind) here at Romance for the Rest of Us! Thanks to Kristi for inviting me to spread my madness.

So, a little about myself.

I've been a Torquere author for a little over a year, and I've published four short stories and a novelette with them. I write both BDSM and vanilla, all M/M. My wife and I are both kinky--she identifies as a sadist, while I'm 70%ish masochist and 30%ish submissive...depending on the day.

For those of you who haven't been a part of BDSMonday before: every Monday, I'll post a BDSM-related...something. It might be a question, an article I've come across, a blog I found interesting, whatever catches my eye! (Ooooh! Shiny!)

Today, in the spirit of "turnabout is fair play", and because it seems like a great way to get to know one another better, I'll be answering your questions! Please keep them at least slightly BDSM-related. If I can't answer or don't feel comfortable answering a particular question, I won't, but I'll do my best. I'd also love to hear your answers to your own and others' questions.
