New Beginnings

It's the 8th of January, and all through the house, not a creature was stirring, not even...

Do you make resolutions in the first blush of the new year, and then lose motivation after a week or two of frenzied effort?  The television abounds with weight loss program ads and gym membership specials, and my health club is jammed with people whom I haven't seen there since last January.  But what happens between now and February?  Why do we lose momentum?

I think it has to do with the way we set our goals.  When we set big, giant goals, they're not achievable.  Small, incremental changes work, but aren't glamorous.  They don't make good commercials with Jessica Simpson.  But if we really want to create lasting change, we need to make peace with the small.

This year, what small wish would you secretly like to have more of in your life?  Is it to write a story? Work out more?  Eat your vegetables?  Why not revamp your resolutions into something manageable and set a small goal for today?  Just today.  Tuesdays have magic too, even though it's not the flash and bang of Friday nor the glum dullness of Monday.  Tuesdays can bring you words, or a yoga class, or some carrots.  What small change could you implement, today, that would allow you to go to bed feeling accomplished?
